As the University of Minnesota camp progresses, so does Michael Dixon. Dixon is entering his junior season with the Gophers. As a versatile defensive back Dixon moves around playing at nickel corner and safety. Coaches have been very impressed with him so far at camp. Defensive coordinator Joe Rossi has said “He’ll play nickel and he’ll play at safety. He’ll do a lot of different things for us and be a lot of different places depending on the package. And so, it’s awesome to be able to have that.” The versatility that Dixon brings will not only be some great added depth but should let him see a lot of playing time this season.
Freshman And Sophomore Years
Dixon didn’t do a whole lot his freshman year. He only played in five games and had five tackles. In his sophomore season Dixon played in all 13 games. He also made his first college start against Miami (Ohio). During the 2021 season Dixon had 12 tackles and one interception in his 13 games.

What To Expect This Season From Dixon
Dixon is expected to assume a much bigger role in Rossi’s defense this season. Dixon will play nickel corner, safety, and more for the Gophers defense. On the depth chart, Dixon is the number two safety for both positions. His size gives him the look of a linebacker at 6-2 and 200 pounds, making him that much better. After only playing 18 games during his first two years and seeing a minimal role on the team, Dixon has stepped up, proving he has what it takes to get some serious playing time in 2022. Dixon didn’t even play in the spring game because of how good he has looked.
Rossi has said that “He’s awesome because he’s got length and he’s got physicality. We can do some things with him in the run fit and being in the run game, but he also can cover. He’s kind of that true hybrid player, and we can play him a bunch of places.” Dixon’s versatility is going to be a massive asset to the Gophers secondary. This will be big if anyone in the secondary suffers an injury, as it looks like Dixon can come in and assume the role very easily. Look out for Dixon, as he’s expected to have a big year with the Gophers this season.
