For the Philadelphia Eagles, the winds of change have blown with hurricane force this off-season. And no positional group has felt the impact of that transformation more than the wide receivers.
A group that just 20 months ago featured waning veterans Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson has been masterfully infused with youth. However, youth alone has not been sufficient to punch a ticket to the final 53. Much to the delight of a frustrated fanbase, the front office has also dispatched with draft day disappointments like Jalen Reagor and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside.
But enough about who is not in town. The real story is a current pass catching group suddenly dripping with upside.
A.J. Brown
At the top of the list is stud wideout, A.J. Brown, who joins the Eagles after being unable to resolve contract displeasure in Tennessee. Brown brings a sorely needed veteran presence paired with an alpha mentality. With a large frame and explosive after catch ability, he also stands to benefit his fledgling signal caller, Jalen Hurts.
DeVonta Smith
With the addition of Brown, second year phenom, DeVonta Smith, will transition to the role of secondary receiver. As a tactical route runner with an established connection to the quarterback, this situation has the potential to put Smith in tremendous position to make plays against lesser coverage.
Slot Options
In the slot, look for the speedy Quez Watkins and the savvy Zach Pascal to platoon at the position. With sub 4.4 forty quickness, Watkins profiles more as a vertical slot, who will stretch zones with his ability to threaten the top of coverages. Whereas Pascal, a former Nick Sirianni disciple in Indianapolis, will be called on to bring veteran leadership and carve out tough yards over the middle.
Special Teams & Depth
Lastly, but certainly not least, the Eagles were fortunate enough to ferry three very talented receivers across waivers and onto the practice squad. Devon Allen brings world class speed as a deep threat and could develop into a significant weapon. A player with pedigree and Sirianni lineage, Deon Cain, had a tremendous camp and certainly warranted a spot. And lastly, rookie Britain Covey flashed impressive shiftiness as a returner, and is a player that may soon be elevated to serve a specialist role.
In Closing…
Indeed, GM Howie Roseman and his staff have expertly transformed this receiving group into one of great promise. Only time will tell if this team delivers on its promise, but the future certainly looks bright for the Birds’ pass catchers.
