The Packers started training camp with many key players on the PUP list. The good news came on Sunday when Elgton Jenkins, Robert Tonyan and Christian Watson came off the list. While all three are important, Elgton Jenkins was maybe the biggest surprise and welcome sight. Getting Elgton Jenkins back would be huge for the Packers
Packers Offensive Line Shuffle
Throughout training camp, there has been a shuffle of offensive line combinations. In the first preseason game against the 49ers, the offensive line looked a little shaky. They weren’t horrible but especially the right side was a little interesting. The good news about this is that if someone like Jenkins comes back, it should solidify the line quickly. In his first practice, it looked like Jenkins was working on footwork for the right tackle spot. Having Jenkins come in a solidify the right side would be a huge boost for the Packers.
Elgton Jenkins’ Versatility
The biggest asset that Jenkins has is his versatility. He can play any spot on the line. As players come back or rise up, Jenkins can easily shift to another spot. For example, rookie Zach Tom has been getting some good reps at right tackle. If in the last couple of preseason games he impresses to a point where the coaching staff feel comfortable with him at right tackle, Jenkins can shift to right guard without any issue.
Packers Offensive Line Will Turn Into A Strength
Right now, I see the Packers line as good but not great. They will definitely be competent but the Packers have high aspirations for the season. The Packers need their offensive line to be elite and Jenkins coming back will help that. The Packers are going to rely heavily on the run game this year with backs Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. In pass protection, keeping Aaron Rodgers upright is vital and giving him time will make him lethal no matter who is catching the ball.
We don’t know when David Bakhtiari will be back. However, if Elgton Jenkins can come back early in the season, it will help Packers fans feel a lot more comfortable about their offensive line.
