Last Saturday, in a primetime tilt with the Kentucky Wildcats, the Georgia football program survived a scare 13-12. Despite former Georgia passer and Kentucky starting quarterback Brock Vanagriff accumulating 97 passing yards until the game’s final drive, the Wildcats had a chance for a walk-off score in the final seconds before the clock struck triple zeroes. Offensively, the Bulldogs did not play well but still won the turnover battle and forced three sacks. However, a discrepancy of 62 yards of penalty yards kept the Wildcats breathing through four quarters.
Across the first three games of the 2024 season, Georgia football has accumulated 80.3 penalty yards per game, the 14th-highest mark in the country. Unsurprising to some, reviewing Georgia’s penalties and their opponents’ penalties per game, the SEC’s power is trending in a direction that could result in closely aligned matchups, resulting in a loss.
Officials Decimating Georgia Football
According to the Georgia football page Bulldawg Report on Twitter:
Georgia’s penalties per game:
2021: 5.1
2022: 4.4
2023: 4.4
2024: 8.3
Georgia’s opponents’ penalties per game:
2021: 6.5
2022: 5.5
2023: 5.0
2024: 4.0
From 2021 to 2023, Georgia football averaged around five penalties per game. However, the number has nearly doubled through three games this season, skyrocketing to more than eight. Georgia is in the bottom 25 in the country regarding penalties and penalty yards per game. The Bulldogs have tallied at least seven penalties in each game this season, lowlighted by nine penalties for 85 yards in an early September clash against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.
As for the penalties accrued by Georgia’s opponents, the average number has decreased in the past four seasons. After three games in 2024, opponents average just 4.0 penalties and 29.7 penalty yards per game, both bottom 15 figures in the FBS. Bulldogs’ opponents have not placed outside the top 50 in the fewest penalties in a game in the past three seasons. Georgia football will enjoy an ideal Saturday this weekend before visiting the rival Alabama Crimson Tide to conclude September.
