Georgia football will finish atop the college football rankings for the eighth straight season, withstanding a meltdown. Winners of two of the past three College Football Playoff title games, the Georgia Bulldogs are among the elite programs regarding on-the-field performance. However, since hiring head coach Kirby Smart in 2016, Georgia has struggled with run-ins with the law, with the issue gradually increasing in recent years. Just this season, more than a half dozen members of the Bulldogs have been arrested for a driving-related incident or a domestic dispute. However, despite the continuous legal issues, Smart finds himself on the watch list for a prestigious award.
Smart, the successor for former Georgia football head coach Mark Richt a near decade ago, is one of 27 college coaches named to the midseason watch list for the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award. Smart has never won the honor but is one of many frontmen to win SEC Coach of the Year multiple times.
Paul “Bear” Bryant COY Award Watch List Names Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart

According to Bear Bryant Awards, Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart is one of seven SEC finalists for the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award:
Southeastern Conference
Kalen DeBoer – University of Alabama
Mike Elko – Texas A&M University
Josh Heupel – University of Tennessee
Brian Kelly – Louisiana State University
Clark Lea – Vanderbilt University
Steve Sarkisian – University of Texas
Kirby Smart – University of Georgia
Longtime Georgia Bulldogs bench boss Kirby Smart is among the 27 head coaches named to the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list. Georgia enters this weekend’s tilt with top-ranked Texas owning a 5-1 record, with their lone blemish coming against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Georgia is in the top 35 for points per game scored and the fewest points allowed.
The Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award is given annually to the top college football coach who “demonstrates grit, integrity, and a winning approach” both on and off the field. However, seven of Smart’s players, including Trevor Etienne, Smael Mondon, Sacovie White, and Bo Hughley, were arrested this year. The last player arrested, Colbie Young, has since been suspended indefinitely from the program on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child.
