Georgia Football: Fans Side With HC Kirby Smart After Revealing Comments on Officiating – Week 8

Georgia football is on the fast track for their third College Football Playoff appearance in four seasons. On Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs walked into DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, and routed the UT Longhorns 30-15. Georgia jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead before Texas showed signs of life in the third quarter. Following a Longhorns score to open the second half, Bulldogs gunslinger Carson Beck tossed a would-be interception if not for a defensive pass interference call. However, following a meeting by the officials amid a sea of beer bottles and trash flooding the field from angry fans seething over the play, the play became reversed, much to the displeasure of UGA head coach Kirby Smart.

Smart took exception to the officials reversing the call of defensive pass interference, specifically with the change of heart coming after the Texas faithful went into a frenzy by throwing garbage onto the field. Smart spoke postgame about the issue, believing the referee’s decision to change the call following the temper tantrum by Texas fans sets a bad precedent. Meanwhile, many Georgia football fans sided with their head coach, taking issue with the situation that unfolded in the top-five tilt.

According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports:

Kirby Smart on the PI reversal: “Now we’ve set a precedent: if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes, you can get the call reversed. That’s dangerous.”

In their 30-15 win on the road against the Texas Longhorns this weekend, officials overturned a defensive pass interference call that wiped away a UT interception. Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart acknowledges the reversal, stating that officials making the switch following fans throwing beer bottles onto the field and endangering athletes sets a bad precedent.

Georgia survived a third-quarter run from Texas, winning convincingly by two touchdowns. In the most recent AP Top 25 Poll, the Bulldogs jumped to the No. 2 spot. At the same time, Texas fell four spots to No. 5. Nevertheless, alongside Smart, fans did not take kindly to the actions displayed by the Texas Longhorns fans, nor did officials change the ruling on the field as a potential result:
