The University of Georgia Bulldogs have been on a reign of terror in college football for the last 8 or so years. Kirby Smart became the head coach at the University of Georgia in December of 2015 and has not looked back since. Kirby Smart was awarded a 10-year contract extension worth $130 million dollars with a yearly salary of $13 million dollars in May of 2024. The contract seems to be well deserved given the success that the program has had throughout Kirby’s tenure as the head coach at the University of Georgia.
Kirby finally got UGA over the College Football Playoff hump with a 33-18, 2022 National Championship victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide and his former coaching mentor, well respected and hailed as the GOAT of college football, Nick Saban. Maybe it was bittersweet for Kirby Smart, but it was joy all around for the Georgia Bulldog fans. Then the next season UGA came back with even more firepower going undefeated in the 2022 regular season and eventually becoming the 2023 College Football Playoff National Champions with a dominating 65-7 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs.
UGA Football
In the 2023 college football season, the Georgia Bulldogs went 13-1. They lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship game 27-24 but they did defeat a hobbled Florida State team 63-3 in the Orange Bowl.
There have been a lot of high expectations for the Bulldogs which makes sense because of the magnitude of their program. Many people expect University of Georgia Football to be great and this 2024 season isn’t any different. Some people look at their season’s as National Championship or bust. The 2024 college football season kicked off with UGA being ranked #1. They defeated Clemson 34-3 in their season opener in Mercedes Benz Stadium and the next week in their home opener against Tennessee Tech, they won 48-3.
The Bulldogs faced Kentucky in Week 3 and there was some familiarity there due to the fact that former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff is now Kentucky’s starter. In the game Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck was 15/24 with 160 yards passing and 0 touchdowns while Wildcats quarterback Brock Vandagriff was 14/27 with 114 yards passing and 0 touchdowns. Georgia relied on their kicker for points throughout the game until the 4th quarter when the Bulldogs scored their only touchdown. Kentucky only acuminated points through field goals. Georgia got the win 13-12 but Kentucky gave them a run for their money.
On the other hand, the Texas Longhorns have been on a roll as they’ve beaten Michigan 31-12 and more recently UTSA 56-7. Quinn Ewers left the game with an injury, but Arch Manning led the team to a victory.
The New Rankings
The Texas Longhorns have been ranked number one in the Week 4 AP Top 25. It came as a surprise to some, but the general consensus is that the Longhorns deserved it. Fans speculate that the reason Texas got the number-one ranking is because of UGA’s poor performance against Kentucky. The Bulldogs face Alabama on September 28th, 2024.
With the recent changes in the AP rankings, are the Georgia Bulldogs still the best team in college football? Some fans believe that the Bulldogs still are. Some even think that their lackluster performance against Kentucky was a fluke. As a lot of football fans know and can attest to, just because a particular team is ranked number 1, that doesn’t always mean they truly are. Is it Texas? Is it Georgia? Is it another team? What do you think?
