California Governor Gavin Newsom may not benefit from being the antagonist to Presdient Donadl trump in the issue of the protest in Los Angeles, at least according to analyst Stephen A. Smith.
In his video, Smith mentioned that with how Newsom and other critics have been dealing with this issue, Trump can eventually use this to “once again derail the Democratic Party.” he also added that while he has always admired Newsom as a smart and caring person, he worried that the governor might be on the wrong side of this particular issue.
“He might be on the wrong side of this issue in terms of how he’s electing to handle it because in the end, this is a guy that’s leaving the gubernatorial seat in California,” Smith said. “People are looking him as looking at him as a presidential candidate in 2028. This ain’t going to win it for him. This ain’t going to win it for him.”
“This ain’t the issue for him to fall on this ward over,” he added. “In my opinion, nevertheless, he seems hellbent on doing so. I don’t know if he can win this issue. I don’t know if Gavin Newsom has won any issue lately.”

While he has not officially declared for anything yet, Newsom has long been expected to be a top name for the 2028 Democratic Party presidential candidate.
Gavin Newsom, State of California Sues Donald Trump
California Governor Gavin Newsom and the state of California filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump, over the latter’s recent extreme measures in response to protests in Los Angeles.
“At no point in the past three days has there been a rebellion or an insurrection. Nor have these protests risen to the level of protests or riots that Los Angeles and other major cities have seen at points in the past, including in recent years,” the lawsuit reads.

The lawsuit also downplayed the Trump administration’s use of Section 12046. It alleged that in order to be able to cite the said law, the state’s National Guard must be called upon through the governors, something Trump did not do, according to Newsom.
According to the lawsuit, Trump’s calling upon the National Guard and the Marines has caused “fear and terror” and “heightened tensions with protesters and residents.” It also did not see the need to call for extreme measures, as the lawsuit argued that the local police had the situation contained.
