The Dallas Cowboys are set to have a former first-round pick at cornerback battle for a roster spot in training camp. The move appears to all but shut the door on the idea of bringing back veteran star Stephon Gilmore for the 2024 season.

Gilmore had a productive season with the Cowboys and wanted to re-sign with the team this offseason. However, as previously discussed on GH, the Cowboys aren’t aggressively trying to finalize a deal with Gilmore:

“During the annual league meeting, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team likes Gilmore, but Dallas has to “pick and choose” where to allocate its resources this season.
Gilmore made just south of $8 million last season, per Over The Cap. The 33-year-old recorded 68 tackles and two interceptions with the Cowboys. Pro Football Focus gave Gilmore a 74.4 grade for his play last season.
Gilmore is still talented, but the Cowboys have been stingy this offseason as they continue to procrastinate with the contracts of Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, and CeeDee Lamb.
There was some hope in the Cowboys fanbase that Gilmore would return when it was reported that Ezekiel Elliott would wear the No. 15 jersey instead of No. 21, which Gilmore wore in Dallas last year. However, Michael Gehlken with theDallas Morning News reported no deal with Gilmore was close to being finalized.

    The Cowboys signed Gareon Conley

Per Michael Gehlken with the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys announced they signed Gareon Conley:
“Cowboys announced they signed CB Gareon Conley along with LB Willie Harvey. Raiders drafted Conley in the 2017 first round. Paul Guenther, the Dallas defense’s run game coordinator, was his DC in Oakland in 2018-19.”

Conley has appeared in 31 NFL games and started in 26. At 28, he’s recorded 94 total tackles and four interceptions. He’s spent time with the Houston Texans in 2019. He played with the DC Defenders in the UFL for the 2024 season.

I remember Conley, He had some talent, But I haven’t seen him in so long lm guessing he’s no better than Gilmore. Maybe even worse. We know what Gilmore offers, must have been a money thing. But I would have taken Gilmore, He is a solid commodity. Not a poke in the dark. We shall see what Conley can do.

Thanks,, my opinion is this, keep Gilmore and you know you got a solid player who can Always make a play for the defense. The Cowboys secondary in my opinion is the best.

I agree with Percy Lee William. And one other thing, if Jerry Jones will allow the people he hire to do their job, and he move out of there way the Cowboys would really be a great trem.
