The South Carolina State Bulldogs (1-2) of the MEAC traveled to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks (3-2) of the FBS level Southeastern Conference. This game was moved up from October 1 due to the potential arrival of Hurricane Ian.
The Bulldogs were coming off a defeat from their rival the North Carolina A&T Aggies of the Big South Conference. The Gamecocks were coming off their second win of the season against the Charlotte 49ers of Conference-USA.
This was the third time that the Bulldogs and the Gamecocks played each other. Their first matchup was in 2007 won by the Gamecocks 38-3. Their second matchup was in 2009 won by also by Gamecocks in 38-14.
Bulldogs Recap
The Gamecocks opened the scoring with a touchdown pass from and a two-point conversion that made the score 8-0. They tacked on two more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 22-0 halftime lead.
The second half scoring opened with a one-yard touchdown run by QB Tyrece Nick. The Gamecocks responded with two third quarter touchdowns to make the score 36-7.
In the fourth quarter the Gamecocks tacked on another touchdown. The Bulldogs kicked a 21-yard field goal by K Gavyn Zimmerman. The Gamecocks scored another touchdown to bring the final score to 50 -10.
Bulldog Defensive Leaders
The defense was led by S Jalen Barr with 10 tackles and second was LB BJ Davis with seven tackles and a forced fumble. DB Duane Nichols was third with six tackles and one pick. S Zion Keith tacked on two tackles and a pick.
The Bulldogs were overpowered by the Gamecocks, but they will definitely be back with more wins this season.
