The Tennessee Titans host the reigning NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers this week to open their preseason schedule. Kickoff at Nissan Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Titans fans are excited for this game as it is the coaching debut for new head coach Brian Callahan, who was hired in January as the 20th head coach in team history. He previously spent the last five seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. The team hired 20 new coaches for for the 2024 season which include HC Brian Callahan, offensive coordinator Nick Holz, defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, and special teams coordinator Colt Anderson.
Titans-49ers Last Matchup
The last time these teams matched up was in week 16 of the 2021 NFL season. This game was in Nissan Stadium on Thursday, December 23, 2021 where the Titans prevailed 20-17. This game improved the Titans’ record against the 49ers to six and nine in 15 all-time matchups in the regular season. This was back before the team traded away star wide receiver AJ Brown.
The last time these teams matched up in the preseason was in 2005 at Candlestick Park, resulting in a 16-13 overtime victory for the Niners.
Newest Titans to Look for
Tennessee has had a busy offseason signing many new players to improve their roster under General Manager Ran Carthon. The 91-man roster includes 35 new players wearing two-tone blue for the first time.
The biggest players that fans are interested to see play are cornerback Chidobe Awuzie (formerly with the Bengals), linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. (Chargers), defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day (49ers), center Lloyd Cushenberry III (Broncos), running back Tony Pollard (Cowboys), safety Jamal Adams (Seahawks), and wide receivers Calvin Ridley (Jaguars) and Tyler Boyd (Bengals). Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed was acquired in a trade. In the draft, the team used its first selection (seventh overall) on Alabama tackle JC Latham.
Quarterback Will Levis is starting his second year in the NFL and will be the Titans’ starting quarterback to start the 2024 NFL season. He is surrounded by lots of talent and is poised to succeed in two-tone blue. The 33rd-overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft stepped into the lineup seven games into his rookie season and eventually totaled nine starts. He completed 149 of 255 passes for 1,808 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
