College football season is right around the corner and many accolades are given after the season is finished. From the Heisman trophy winner, the Dick Butkus winner, Fred Biletnikoff winner, and more. Hawaii’s Polynesian players have an opportunity to win Polynesian college football player of the year.
Offensive lineman Solo Vaipulu, defensive lineman Blessman Ta’ala, defensive lineman Jonah Kahahawai-welch, and wide receiver Jonah Panoke are in the spotlight.
What is the Polynesian Football Player of the Year?
According to the Polynesian football website, the award is given to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that epitomizes great ability and integrity. The players spotlighted can win the award if they play at a high level and show integrity during the season.
Who has won it before?
Since 2014, many Polynesian football players have won the award. Notable players include; Marcus Mariota, Ronnie Stanley, Tua Tagovailoa, and Penei Sewell. Most recently Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Haskell Garrett won the award.
If any of the players win the award, how does it benefit Hawaii’s football program?
Many Polynesian people live in Hawaii. Polynesian people have a lot of pride and respect their culture. If one of the players is selected Hawaii football can gain national attention and more players will come to play for Hawaii.
