Former San Francisco 49ers and Raiders Linebacker Talks About Heartbreaking Concussion Story

It’s no secret how detrimental a concussion can be to an athlete’s career. Short- and long-term symptoms can include cognitive impairment, physical symptoms, and emotional changes. It is also no secret that football is the most common sport with concussion-related injuries; 23% of all sports-related concussions are from football alone. One former Raiders and 49ers player knows more about this than most, sustaining 20 documented concussions in his 16-year career in the league.

Bill Romanowski is proactively trying to combat any potential long-term effects from brain concussion injuries, including 40 treatments in a hyperbaric chamber to prevent CTE(Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). This type of treatment is meant for severe infections, diabetes, and radiation injuries that NFL players usually go through for the rest of their lives.

“So, now, CTE, how does it affect a healthy brain? I try to do whatever I can do. I don’t know if there’s anybody in the country that is taking care of themselves the way I am. So, if I start noticing a decline in certain areas, well, guess what? I will search out more experts in the brain and take it upon myself to get more aggressive in my treatment.”

CTE is a very devastating brain condition that is usually caused by repeated impacts to the head. CTE degrades athletes’ brain function over time, leading to extreme consequences on and off the field. Bill Romanowski has appeared in five Super Bowls, winning four, including two with the 49ers. Throughout his polarized career, he totaled 1,118 tackles, 39.5 sacks, and 18 interceptions and fumbles recovered. He also played an impressive 243 consecutive games, showcasing his toughness and durability.

Bill Romanowski is transitioning from one of the most aggressive linebackers to an advocate for mental health. One can’t help but wonder, could his experience with having multiple concussions be the reason why he became so motivated to educate the younger generation? Will his contributions off the field become as successful as his achievements on the field?
