When the Kansas City Chiefs trimmed their rosters to 53 players last week, they made the decision to cut embattled wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who won the last two Super Bowls with the team. Despite the immense level of team success that the Chiefs have enjoyed, it seemed to have come despite Toney rather than because of his contributions.
It should be said, though, that he did play a role in their victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, returning a punt return to give Kansas City great field position late and recording a touchdown catch.
“I don’t think we’re sitting here going for a 3rd straight Super Bowl without that trade,” general manager Brett Veach said of the original Toney trade when he announced the wide receiver had been cut.
Why Did the Kansas City Chiefs Cut Wide Receiver Kadarius Toney?
Toney was originally drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. As a rookie, he had 39 receptions for 420 yards and no touchdowns.
Not long after the start of the 2022 season, the Giants sent Toney to the Chiefs for two draft picks. In seven games with Kansas City that year, he had 14 receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
Last season, Toney was expected to take a big leap forward in his first full season in the Chiefs’ offense. But it did not happen. Instead, he posted just 27 receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown in 13 games.
During training camp, he was consistently outperformed by the other wide receivers on the depth chart, unable to get any higher than the eighth ranked player at the position on their roster.
Former Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Kadarius Toney Worked Out for the Seattle Seahawks
Earlier today, it was reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Toney worked out for the Seattle Seahawks. However, it does not appear that he is being signed as of right now:

Seattle, of course, boasts three exciting wide receivers at the top of their depth chart in DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. They also have Jake Bobo, Dareke Young, and Lavlska Shenault Jr. on their 53-man roster.
The Seahawks also have one wide receiver, Cody White, on their practice squad.
Whichever team Toney signs with this season, if he signs with one at all, it will be his third team in just four seasons.
What a fall from grace for a former first round pick!
