The 2024 season has been a record-setting season for the Florida State Seminoles. Unfortunately, these aren’t records any team in college football would ever want. The Seminoles were humiliated by Notre Dame, 52-3, all while achieving the worst record for any preseason top-10 team. With their ninth loss of the season, Florida State became the first preseason top-10 team to ever lose nine games.
This has been quite the nosedive for a team that finished the 2023 regular season at 13-0. Even with the losses at key positions, Seminole fans were excited at the idea of continued success in 2024. Those expectations vanished after just a few games earlier in the year. With their lone victory coming against the California Golden Bears, the Seminoles were able to achieve their only glimmer of success this season. Every other game has been a painful reminder of how far the once mighty Florida State Seminoles have fallen. Their most recent loss to Notre Dame added another footnote to this already disastrous year.
The 49-point loss to Notre Dame tied the record for the Seminoles’ largest loss of all time. With everything that has gone wrong for FSU in 2024, is it possible that this might be the worst team in school history?

What Else Is New?
Yesterday’s defeat to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came as no surprise based off of FSU’s recent struggles. What did shock the college football world was how badly the Seminoles were beaten. Losing 49 points to Notre Dame was an indication that the end could be near for head coach Mike Norvell. Norvell has been highly criticized by Seminole fans, not only for the team’s poor performance but the inability of the coaching staff to make the proper adjustments.
There was no fight in the Seminoles in their blowout loss to Notre Dame. FSU finished the game with 208 total yards, 75 of those on their first drive alone. The Seminoles offense has been non-existent in 2024, and it showing absolutely no signs of improving anytime soon.
Riley Leonard had another solid performance for the Irish, throwing for one touchdown and running in two more scores. Notre Dame ended up finishing with just over 400 total yards of offense, a statistic that could have been a lot worse based on the outcome.
For Seminoles quarterback Brock Glenn, it was a day he would soon like to forget. Glenn had a brutal night, finishing 5/18 for 51 yards and two interceptions. Glenn also added to his atrocious night with nine carries for only five yards. It also didn’t help that Notre Dame’s defense finished the game with eight sacks, three by defensive lineman Rylie Mills. If you combine these numbers it’s easy to see just how bad the Seminoles offense has been this year. Obviously the loss of Jordan Travis has proven to be the biggest factor, but there is too much talent on this team to be losing by 49 points.

Will Mike Norvell Have A Job Next Season?
Mike Norvell was on top of the world in 2023. The Seminoles were cruising through the season led by an explosive offense and a stalwart defense. The Seminoles seemed destined to be one of the top 4 teams to compete in the College Football Playoff. In a very winnable game against North Alabama, the entire season took a very wrong turn. Star quarterback Jordan Travis went down with a fractured ankle, ultimately changing the trajectory for their entire season.
There was a lot of speculation that Travis should not have played much in that game because of the easy opponent they were facing. The Seminoles had to ride out the rest of the season without their best player. After defeating Florida and Louisville, pretty much by the strength of their defense since the offense struggled, the Seminoles were still anticipating a playoff berth. Unfortunately, FSU’s dreams were shattered as they were left out of the top four, settling instead for the Orange Bowl as the ACC Champions.
Things continued to get worse for the Seminoles after the playoff snub. Prior to the Orange Bowl, most FSU players decided to opt out of the bowl game in order to prepare for the NFL draft. With most of their roster unavailable, FSU was destroyed by Georgia 63-3, a 60-point humiliation that the Seminoles have yet to recover from. Seminole fans are upset at the fact that head coach Mike Norvell has been unable to steer the ship in the right direction since the Orange Bowl.
The Seminoles have looked disinterested and flat-out lost in their games this season. Can a change to the head coaching position be the only option for FSU? This circumstance is quite unique based off of how good the Seminoles were in 2023. It would seem unthinkable to have these thoughts based on the success Mike Norvell has had in turning the program around. In major programs like FSU however, if you are not winning, you won’t be around for very long. It really makes you wonder, how can a coach who finished 13-1 the year prior be public enemy number one in Tallahassee?
