The future of Florida football is in the hands of a youth movement led by true freshman quarterback DJ Lagway. A five-star super prospect, Lagway started his second game of the season last year following a season-ending injury to veteran starter Graham Mertz. Two weekends ago, Lagway led Florida to a 48-20 win over the Kentucky Wildcats, tallying 305 yards. Alongside Lagway, freshman running back Jadan Baugh has also shinned, posting five touchdowns across seven games for the 4-3 Gators.
Baugh and sophomore Jakobi Jackson continue to spell senior back Montrell Johnson, a three-year standout with Florida football. Last season, Johnson split time with Trevor Etienne, the brother of Jacksonville Jaguars lead back Travis Etienne. However, following last year, the younger Etienne darted for the transfer portal, joining the Georgia Bulldogs. The former Florida rusher discussed his reasoning for switching SEC schools this week.
Former Florida Football RB Trevor Etienne On Transferring
According to CBSSports on TikTok, two-year Florida football standout running back Trevor Etienne transferred to Georgia for the opportunity to play for a national contender:
I mean, for me, it was like, does the good outweigh the bad? I’ve been with Florida for two years. I went through, you know, that whole, like, process of rebuilding and I felt like a lot of uncertainties, a lot of questions were unanswered. I feel like I can stay here and do what I’ve been doing for another year or two or bet on myself and take a chance somewhere else. So, you know, pretty much to sum it up, it was like, I could either be RB2 on a losing team or go somewhere… I wanted to play in December, too. That also played a big part in me transferring.
Trevor Etienne, who collected 1,710 scrimmage yards and 15 touchdowns in two seasons with the Florida Gators, left the program for the transfer portal last offseason. Etienne eventually landed with conference power Georgia, claiming the opportunity to play for a winning program greatly influenced his decision. Meanwhile, Florida continues to compete for bowl eligibility this year, while Georgia is 6-1 and squarely in the conversation for a berth in the College Football Playoff. Etienne also expressed a desire for more opportunities to carry the football. After splitting carries last year, Etienne has become the lead back with the Georgia Bulldogs.
In six games, Etienne has 552 yards and seven touchdowns. Two weekends ago, Etienne scampered for 87 yards and three touchdowns in an upset win over then-top-ranked Texas. Etienne has scored in each of his past four games and is on pace to score his most touchdowns in a single season. This Sunday, Etienne will have an opportunity to play his old school as the two SEC squads will face off at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
