Florida football has a budding superstar in dual-threat passer DJ Lagway. Per 247 Sports, Lagway was one of three five-star quarterbacks in the 2024 recruiting class. More notably, he was the only one to receive a perfect 100 score. Lagway operated as the backup quarterback for the Florida Gators to begin the 2025 campaign. However, a season-ending injury to starting passer Graham Mertz led the way to the true freshman becoming the leader on offense.
Lagway did an admirable job as the lead man for the Florida offense despite inconsistent play while dealing with a nagging hamstring injury suffered in November. As for his 2025 prospects, Florida will slow play Lagway’s off-season progression due to a shoulder injury. With the former five-star not sustaining a shoulder injury last season and playing the entirety of their bowl game victory over the Tulane Green Wave, one Florida football insider believes something “fishy” might be happening down in Gainesville surrounding their blue-chip quarterback.

Earlier this offseason, Florida football announced that quarterback DJ Lagway would be limited in throwing activities while dealing with a shoulder injury. On Thursday, Mark Young of the Associated Press hit the airwaves, indicating that Lagway never suffered a shoulder injury last season. Young reveals that he pressed Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier about the severity of the injury and potential surgery, with the bench boss emphasizing the signal-caller has yet to go under the knife.
“We have consulted with quite a few experts here at UF Health as we do with a lot of our players in terms of second opinion,” said Napier when speaking on the nature of Lagway’s emerging shoulder injury. Young questions how Lagway played in the season finale against the Tulane Green Wave with no indication of an upper-body injury but is now dealing with shoulder damage. Lagway went 22-of-35 for 305 yards and one touchdown in the Gasparilla Bowl. He also added five carries for 7 yards while throwing two interceptions.
