No, this is not a comparison of mobile quarterbacks, this is a reality check of what the roster is capable of. The Giants are a new team with new philosophies, players, and chemistry that need to be developed.
Kansas City was ranked 4th in passing yardage and 8th in scoring offense while the Bills ranked 9th and 1st respectively. Both teams have established regimes and have already rebuilt their lines. The quarterbacks have well-developed chemistry with their receivers and familiarity with the playbook. If the Giants were to attempt to mimic either of these two teams they will fail.
But they won’t. I am betting the coaches have seen what they have and realized that at the very least it will be a balanced offense. Everyone associated with the organization should be pleased if they finish middle of the pack in both rushing and passing or even a little run heavy like New England.
Work With What You Have
As usual, everything starts at the line and across the board, the Giants linemen are better at run blocking than they are at pass blocking. As they are a new group it only makes sense to use their strength to get them to gel faster. Of course, Saquon Barkley will be spread out and get his share of receptions but they won’t ignore the talent there. By using their diminutive but quick receivers to gain first down after first down with 3 to 7-yard routes they can still open up the run game and avoid having their pass protection become a backbreaking liability.
It does sound like a Bill Belichick Offense but he never had Saquon Barkley. The Giants including Jones will rush more, and their run game will look more like the Ravens than the Bills. Yet, the Ravens don’t have the bevy of receivers the Giants have nor will Jones be operating like Lamar Jackson nor Josh Allen. Though there is only a small sample to judge from Jone is allegedly an accurate deep passer. That will have to wait until the run game is established and he has a feel for his receivers, hopefully by seasons end.
If you go by what we have seen in camp, it will be a fast-paced offense with lots of motion and various reads that have shades of Kafka and Daboll, but this is a different team. It won’t be the Bills or KC’s offense, nor the Patriots or Ravens. It’s going to be the Giant’s offense.
