It is no surprise that football head coach Mel Tucker and Offensive Line Coach Chris Kapilovic are looking to revamp an offensive line that has become underwhelming in previous years. The 2023 recruiting class is a good start, but the staff needs to continue to build strong classes. Enter four-star offensive tackle Fletcher Westphal out of Leesburg, VA. Westphal is a massive 6-foot-8, 330-pound tackle with offers from Clemson, Georgia, Miami, Penn State, and others. 247Sports Composite Rankings currently ranks him as the 13th best offensive tackle and the number 216 prospect overall in the 2024 class. Westphal’s favorite part about Michigan State so far.
Westphal was kind enough to answer a few questions I had for him regarding his opinion on Michigan State. I asked him what attracts him Michigan State, and he explained, “right now, it’s Coach Kapilovic and what he’s doing with the OL, which he acknowledged was called the “juice squad.” The entire staff made a strong impression on Westphal, as he added, “I’m also impressed by the MSU staff, from the academics to strength trainer, because when I visited, I got to spend a lot of time with them.”

I asked Westphal for his opinion on Michigan State’s head coach. He explained that Tucker was “really easy” to talk to when they met. He added that he is sure his coaching is “no-nonsense because he has high expectations of his players.” Is it clear that Mel Tucker’s laid-back persona off the field and aggressive coaching style are attractive to recruits.
There is still a long way to go before Wethphal makes a decision. As a junior, he cannot take official visits at this time, but Westphal told me that he plans on attending a game this season. It appears Michigan State is in contention based of the interview with Michigan State recruit. If he does commit to MSU, he will go up against one of the best defensive end prospects in the 2023-class.
