The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Green Bay Packers 34-29 in the NFL‘s first game played on the South American continent. The Week One matchup, which was considered a home game for the Eagles, pitted two of the league’s best quarterbacks (Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love) against each other, as well as two defenses with high expectations this season.
However, the game turned into an offensive slugfest, with touchdowns and field goals being traded all game long. As exciting as plays were by both teams, though, one of the biggest talking points during and after the game was the number of penalties.
Of course, head referee Ronald Torbert was brought up often as a result.
NFL Referee Ronald Torbert Called So Many Penalties, He Lost His Voice
The Eagles and Packers’ matchup saw a total of 17 penalties called. Green Bay committed 10 penalties for 71 yards and Philadelphia was flagged seven times for 57 yards.
So many penalties were called (whether or not they were all committed is up for serious debate), that head referee Ronald Torbert lost his voice.
And social media did not miss:
Ronald Torbert sounding like RFK Jr.

Ronald Torbert has called so many penalties, he’s gone hoarse.

If you wanna know how much penalties have been called in a game, listen to Ronald Torbert.
If he’s losing his voice, a lot of penalties. If not, then not so much.

Ronald Torbert, my guy, you are literally surrounded by Gatorade…don’t do this to yourself

Ronald Torbert’s voice is going — too much talking!

Can somebody please give Ronald Torbert a lozenge or a cup of honey and lemon? That man is going through it right now. #NFL

The comments are quite funny, and even the broadcasters on Peacock said something about Torbert losing his voice during the game.
Perhaps if his crew had not called so many phantom penalties (on both teams), he would not have gone viral.
