On Friday, the Cincinnati Bengals extended the contract of a key player for three seasons. The Bengals made the move in a a year that will be pivotal for their salary cap future.
Cincinnati Bengals GM was worried about two contracts this summer
Per Sports Illustrated, Bengals general manager Duke Tobin hinted earlier this summer that the team would try and get new deals done for kicker Evan McPherson and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Tobin didn’t say when that would happen:
“It’s a possibility that could come together,” Tobin said about McPherson’s extension. “It could come together as we’re talking here. It could come together next week, it could come together never. Is that a good enough timeline for you?”
The time for Chase hasn’t come yet, but the time for McPherson is now.
Evan McPherson signed a contract extension
According to Mike Garafolo with the NFL Network, McPherson agreed to a three-year extension:
The #Bengals agreed to terms on a three-year, $16.5 million extension with K Evan McPherson, per his agents at @SPORTSTARSNYC/ McPherson will earn $10 million in new money in the first year of the deal, highest ever for a three-year kicker extension.
Kicker contracts are going up this year.
It’s a great time to be an NFL kicker
Earlier this month, the Chiefs gave Butker a four-year deal worth $25.6 million. Butker is guaranteed to make $14.8 million. He’s the highest-paid kicker in NFL history.
McPherson’s deal isn’t too shabby.
McPherson has made 78 field goals in his 93 career attempts. He made seven field goals in his 12 attempts of 50 or more yards last season. He has a 95.5 percent make for extra points in his career.
McPherson will have more responsibilities this season. Due to the new kickoff rules, ball placement on kickoffs is more important than ever.
McPherson’s deal gets one headache off Tobin’s mind this preseason. Now, he can focus on Chase.
