The Detroit Lions lost another key member of the roster on Tuesday. The injury bug is hitting hard in training camp for a Lions team that has high expectations after narrowly missing out on making the Super Bowl last season.
The Detroit Lions lost a key defender on July 30
As previously discussed on GH, the Lions lost defensive end John Cominsky with a torn MCL on July 30:
However, they are going to be a man short now as ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that defensive end John Cominsky suffered a torn MCL during Tuesday’s practice and will be out indefinitely.
However, there is some optimism that he would be able to return in the postseason if the Detroit Lions can make it back. Cominsky was entering his third season with the Lions (sixth overall) and started 11 games. He finished with a career-high 36 total tackles, two sacks, eight QB hits and a pass deflection. In the playoffs, he recorded seven total tackles, a pair of quarterback hits and a pass deflection.
Cominsky was a projected backup for the Lions’ defense. On Tuesday, they announced they were losing a player who was battling for a starting roster spot.
Emmanuel Mosely sustained a torn pec
According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, cornerback Emmanuel Mosely sustained a torn pectoral muscle in practice. He is out indefinitely after missing much of the previous two seasons due to injury:
Coach Dan Campbell confirmed Tuesday that Moseley is sidelined indefinitely but did not confirm the nature of the injury.
It marks the third consecutive season that Moseley has suffered a major injury.
After missing the final 12 games of the 2022 season because of a torn left ACL, Moseley appeared in only one game with the Lions last season because of a torn ACL in his right knee.
Moseley was battling for the starting nickelback position before the injury. A torn pectoral injury usually knocks players out for a season. However, Campbell said the Lions hope he can come back for the end of the season since the injury occurred early in training camp.
The Detroit Lions hope Moseley can return at the end of the season
Per ESPN, Campbell said he believes Moseley can “rally” from his third major injury in as many years:
“It’s tough,” Campbell said Tuesday. “That’s tough. He’s the one that’s put so much work coming back from two ACLs. It’s frustrating, but he knows. Look, you’ve got two decisions, you either rally one more time, or you say, you know what, enough is enough. My gut is going to tell me he’s going to rally again.
The Lions are sure to see more injuries hit during the season. A January return for Moseley might help the Lions roster rally for the playoffs.
