The Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers are kicking off the 2024 season with a bang in Brazil. For the first time ever the NFL will be playing a game in South America. While many fans and analysts are stoked for this historic matchup, there are others who feel a little differently.
One of them is a leader for Philadelphia’s defense.
Philadelphia Eagles Star “Doesn’t Want To Go” When It Comes To Week One
The Philadelphia Eagles’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers wouldn’t happen in Brazil if cornerback Darius Slay had his way:
“I do not want to go to Brazil,” he said on his podcast (36-minute mark). “… They already told us not to leave the hotel, they told us we can’t do too much because the crime rate is crazy. NFL, why do you want to send us somewhere where the crime rate is this high?”
He also said he told his family not to come because he plans on eating in the hotel and remaining there except for when the team goes to the stadium to play.
The game is this Friday, and the Eagles’ travel plans have released on their website:
“The Eagles are leaving on Wednesday, flying for about 10 hours, arriving Wednesday night, having a team walkthrough at the stadium on Thursday, playing the game on Friday night, and then flying back to Philadelphia immediately after the game.
The turnaround time is remarkable, and while the team is traveling outside of the United States, the time difference is only one hour.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen players express their concerns regarding what they’ve heard about Brazil. Chances are, the league is just taking extra precaution to protect their players, however, it is a little surprising to see such a level of concern regarding safety.
The NFL has taken drastic measures over the last few decades to promote player safety on the field, are they taking the same precautions while shipping two teams to Brazil? While the obvious answer should be yes, it is wild to see such a worry from multiple stars.
