The Philadelphia Eagles put on a show in their opening season victory against the Detroit Lions. There were plenty ups and downs in Sunday’s game. Here we’ll take a look at the good, bad, and the ugly for the Birds. All in all a win is a win and the Eagles start their season off with a 1-0 record. There are plenty of highlights to showcase in the 38-35 win, however, there were also some things we did not expect from a team that looks invincible on paper. Here we will look at the Eagles Good, Bad, and the Ugly.
The Good
Jalen Hurts shook off the rust and earned a much deserved W. Although Hurts looked lack luster at times in the game, he did what he needed to do as a QB to win. Hurts went 18/32 with 243 yards with a rushing tally and sacked only 1 time. He rushed 17 times for 90 yards, proving his arm isn’t the only weapon in his arsenal. Most importantly, he did not turn over the ball which would have most likely cost the Eagles the game. A.J. Brown looked like the superstar receiver the Eagles traded for in the offseason, posting 10 receptions for 155 yards. The biggest surprise though had to be the running backs. Sanders, Gainwell, and Scott all put up a TD each. Sanders, on his last contract year put up 96 yards on 13 carries.
The Bad
In it’s entirety, the passing game was weak for the Eagles. The offensive show was the run game. Besides A.J. Brown, the Eagles receivers didn’t have much going for them. DeVonta Smith had zero catches and was targeted only 4 times. Dallas Goedert had 60 yards on 3 receptions. There wasn’t much of a passing game we expected out of the Eagles in game one of the season. Although this is only the first game, it still leaves questions about Jalen Hurt’s passing vision and the Eagles offense to establish a consistent passing rhythm.
The Ugly
Clearly the offense came out to play, however, the same cannot be said entirely for the defense. With so many key players stacked on the Eagles defense, they did not perform as well as anyone expected. The defense sacked Jared Goff only once. The Lions QB threw for 215 yards and the Eagles defense got lucky it wasn’t more. Luckily the Lions receivers had some dropped passes and Goff had some inaccurate throws that, if they connected, very well would have changed the scoreboard. The Eagles had ,at one point, a 17 point lead over Detroit but with missed tackles against Swift and wide open receivers, that lead was chipped away. The defense needs to regroup and hold down big leads to a powerful Eagles offense. There was no reason this game had to end in a nail biter.
