According to Pro Football Talk, Darius Slay has been named week two NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
This should come as no surprise. Slay recorded two interceptions and five passes defensed against Minnesota, while dropping two more potential interceptions. He also played a large role in shutting down star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who only had one catch and seven yards while being covered by Slay. Both of Slay’s interceptions came while covering Jefferson.
This was a dominant game by the Eagles defense, particularly in the second half. Despite having the ball inside Eagles’ territory five times, the Vikings were held to just seven points. The Eagles recorded all three interceptions on their own side of the field.
This was the second time an Eagle has received Player of the Week honors in 2022. In week one, Zech McPhearson earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for recovering a surprise onside kick in the third quarter, as well as making two special teams tackles, against the Lions.
This is Slay’s fifth career Defensive Player of the Week title, second with the Eagles. He previously earned the honor three times during his time with the Detroit Lions.
Moving forward, the Eagles secondary will continue to lean on Slay as their top corner. Both he and James Bradberry rank in the top five for passer rating allowed to this point in the season, but it is Slay who will continuously be asked to cover opposing teams top pass catchers. Going into a week three matchup against Washington, high level cornerback play is a must.
