President Donald Trump has publicly called on legendary college football coach Nick Saban to take a more active role in overseeing college athletics, citing growing concerns over the financial and structural turmoil brought on by Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal.
Trump made the remarks during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, where he argued that Saban’s experience and integrity make him uniquely qualified to help guide the future of college sports.
“He’s a fantastic guy … they should get involved in college sports in terms of making sure … it all works out,” Trump said.
Warning Over College Finances & NIL Escalation

The president expressed deep alarm over what he called “out-of-control” NIL compensation. He warned that colleges could face financial collapse if the current spending trend continues. (Yahoo Sports)
“Even rich colleges are going to go bust … all of a sudden, you’re going to have NFL-type payrolls,” Trump said, likening the situation to professional sports.
He also suggested that without limits, smaller “lesser sports” programs could be eliminated entirely. “A lot of the lesser sports are being totally terminated … a lot of those training grounds” for things like Olympic development, he added. (The Spun)
Donald Trump’s Proposal: Nick Saban as a Guiding Figure
In his remarks, Donald Trump floated the idea of Saban helping lead a commission or group tasked with creating structural reforms in college athletics.
He emphasized that he trusts Saban’s judgment, saying, “I’d listen to what he has to say … I know him well, and he’s a fantastic guy, and what a great coach.” (Yahoo Sports)
The proposal reflects Trump’s concern that the current college sports model is unsustainable, especially in football, where he believes unchecked NIL compensation will continue to escalate.
Nick Saban’s Response: Advisory, Not Leadership
Nick Saban, for his part, appears open to helping — but not to leading a formal commission. Speaking at his “Nick’s Kids” golf tournament, he stated:
“I don’t think we need a commission … we just have to have people who are willing to move … and create some solutions for some of those issues.”
He added:
“If I can be a consultant to anybody … I would be more than happy to do that.” (College Sports Network)
Bigger Picture: Why This Matters
Trump’s comments underscore a growing national debate over how to regulate NIL, protect smaller athletic programs, and preserve the sustainability of college sports. By invoking Saban — one of college football’s most respected figures — Trump is trying to shift some of that reform burden to someone he believes can bring both credibility and knowledge to the conversation.
If Saban were to take even an advisory role, it could lend significant weight to Trump’s efforts. But Saban’s measured response suggests he’s interested in helping where he can, without assuming a formal or political role.
Whether this ultimately leads to a formal commission, policy changes, or a new governing body remains unclear. For now, Trump has made his pitch — and has put one of college football’s most influential voices squarely in the spotlight as a potential reformer.
