As the United States slides into the kind of country where the media has to give favorable coverage of their leader or fear retaliation, President Donald Trump is receiving special treatment from the NFL and its partners who cover the league.
Or so says a league insider.
Trump has brought a lawsuit against “60 Minutes“, is suing the Wall Street Journal, and settled a lawsuit with ABC.
President Donald Trump and the ESPN/NFL merger

Following Trump using the CBS/Paramount merger as leverage in a lawsuit, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated is reporting that the league is “playing nice” with Trump as it tries to finalize a deal with ESPN.
“We mentioned this before, but now, with the ESPN/NFL Media deal at the goal line, it’s worth noting again that the justice department has to approve the merger,” Breer wrote. “Which a lot of folks believe is why the league has been playing nice with President Donald Trump of late.”
The line between sports and politics continues to blur in the 47th administration.
Trump’s White House recently named several former and current league players, such as Harrison Butker and Lawrence Taylor, to his council on sports, fitness, and nutrition.
Saquon Barkley was named as a member of the council, even though the Philadelphia Eagles running back denied the request to be included. Commissioner Roger Goodell is on the council. Barkley didn’t think it was good business to be attached to Trump. We’ll see if he changes his tune in the near future.
Why would Goodell want his name attached to the council? Maybe so he can get the merger with ESPN approved.
