Donald Trump and the NFL seem to be synonymous with one another at times.  Trump made a splash at the very beginning of this Presidency by becoming the first sitting President to attend the Super Bowl.  He has hosted multiple teams at the White House this year and has golfed with numerous athletes.

However, there is something brewing between the two that could result in some pretty massive ramifications.

Despite threats from President Donald Trump, Washington Commanders’ ownership remains intransigent about keeping the name:

But it’s being reported that they are considering reverting to their former Redskins moniker following his demands.

The President is not a fan of the current name and has been putting pressure on the NFC East franchise to change it back to the one they dropped five years ago.

“The Washington “Whatevers” should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team,” he declared via his Truth Social platform earlier this month.

Trump added that “Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them,” ordering the owners to “GET IT DONE!!!”

Trump has since threatened to block the team’s stadium plans, stating he may put a restriction on the organization if they don’t go back to the Redskins branding and “get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commanders.”

“I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington,” he said in conclusion.

The New York Post reports that team owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer are privately considering the change due to the pressure from the POTUS and have been warning businesses that the government indeed has some clout where their potential move is concerned.

“They’re really getting nervous about Trump’s attacks and how they might impact the stadium deal,” the Post notes, citing a source.

Since returning to the presidency, Donald Trump has taken a notable interest in sports. While he has always been an avid golfer, the leader of the free world has attended multiple major events this year, including the Super Bowl and the FIFA Club World Cup Final.

He has also signed an executive order to regulate the NIL program in college sports.

Should he get the Commanders to change their name, we imagine many fans will be pleased.
