US President Donald Trump’s latest remarks on the Washington Commanders have had many people sharing their two cents on the matter, including renowned sports journalist, Stephen A. Smith. The current POTUS made headlines a day back when he literally commanded the Washington team to go back to being called the Washington Redskins.

The Commanders did away with their Redskins name after the 2019 NFL season when numerous Native American representatives called out the team for their racist name. Some of the big-time sponsors of the team also threatened to cut off ties if the team did not make the change. After going by the Washington Football Team for a couple of seasons, the franchise eventually settled on the Washington Commanders since the 2022 NFL season. However, President Trump wants the team to go back to Redskins for which he was condemned by Smith.

“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this… Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen… OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!” US President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social.

“Well, I think it’s the president being petty. I think it’s him being evasive…He caters to his base because when you look at the Redskins name, obviously, it’s something that needed to be changed…It’s just him catering to his base to make sure that he serves to appease them in some way, to distract them from other issues.” Stephen A. Smith commented on President Trump’s remarks.

President Donald Trump not only advised the Washington Commanders to go back to their old name, but also threatened to put an end to the team’s plans for a new stadium in Washington D.C. President Trump’s comments have brought about a range of reactions on social media, ranging from jokes to disappointment about the POTUS.
