‘The Problem Is…’: Dolphins Get Low Grade for Trade With Steelers

The recent trade between the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers has sparked considerable debate among analysts and fans alike. While the Steelers are praised for acquiring star cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith, the team received a low grade for their decision to part ways with Ramsey and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

This deal, involving significant talent on both sides, raises questions about Miami’s long-term strategy and immediate impact on their roster. Analysts have pointed out that Miami’s decision to trade away Ramsey, who has been a cornerstone of their defense, could weaken their secondary considerably.

Ramsey’s versatility and experience made him a key player, and losing him without securing a similar replacement may hinder the team’s defensive capabilities. The Dolphins are now left with a younger, less experienced group, which could expose them to challenges against high-powered offenses.

In exchange, Miami received Fitzpatrick, who previously played for them before joining the Steelers. While Fitzpatrick’s return adds depth to the safety position, questions remain about his recent performance and whether he can regain his previous form. His ability to adapt to the Dolphins’ system will be crucial as the team attempts to rebuild its defensive identity.

The financial implications of this trade also raise concerns. The Dolphins cleared some cap space by moving Ramsey, but they also absorbed Fitzpatrick’s contract, which may not provide the financial flexibility they need moving forward. This balancing act reflects a broader trend in Miami as they navigate their roster and salary cap in hopes of becoming a competitive force in the league.

As it stands, Miami has ended with a low grade after their trade with the Steelers. This is detailed more in an article by John Breech for CBS Sports.

    Dolphins: C

The Dolphins got rid of two disgruntled players, but the problem is that both players still have a lot left in the tank. Ramsey was the best cornerback on their roster last year and trading him away makes their secondary worse. As for Smith, he caught 88 passes last season, which led the team. He also finished with 884 receiving yards, which was second on the roster behind only Tyreek Hill. By trading away their best corner and their leading receiver from last season, the Dolphins definitely didn’t get better on the field with this trade.

The Dolphins had a huge need at safety, so the addition of Fitzpatrick will help, especially since Miami let Jevon Holland walk in free agency, but the 28-year-old has been on a very slight downswing over the past two years with just one total interception since the start of the 2023 season. If Fitzpatrick returns to his 2022 form, this could be a huge move for Miami.

Critics argue that Miami missed an opportunity to strengthen its roster further. By trading away established talent without acquiring sufficient assets in return, they risk stagnating in a competitive AFC East. This could lead to increased pressure on both the coaching staff and players as the season unfolds.

Miami’s trade with the Steelers has been met with skepticism due to the perceived risks involved. While acquiring Fitzpatrick may offer some benefits, the loss of Ramsey could prove detrimental to their defensive unit.
