A lot is made of recruiting in college football. Rightfully so, attracting top-tier talent is what separates good coaches from great coaches. Fans argue about recruiting throughout the entire off-season. Some believe recruiting leads to success. However, for Utah State, does it really matter?
The Aggies won the Mountain West Championship…. And finished last in 2021 recruiting in the conference.
Utah State won their first Mountain West Championship in 2021. The Aggies had a tremendous season finishing 11-3 en route to a Mountain West Championship. After their conference title, they would beat Oregon State in a bowl game.
The Aggies completed a successful season, yet, in the recruiting world, they lost. Head coach Blake Anderson had the worst recruiting class in the entire conference, finishing 12th. Meanwhile, the team they played in the conference championship finished with the best recruiting class in the conference.
Utah State is showing success can come from a variety of different places, not just recruiting.
Utah State has done more with “less.”
When a program has a poor recruiting class, critics write them off, and fans wallow in despair. The Mountain West does not garner the same attention as the SEC and Big 10. Nevertheless, the rules of college football apply to every team, and a poor job in recruiting should lead to poor performance.
However, Blake Anderson has simply found ways to win. He has done more with “less.” However, does that saying really apply in this situation?
Utah produced the best receiver in the Mountain West in 2021, Deven Thompkins. Logan Bonner had a great season. The Aggie’s offense ranked top 25 in the entire country in total offense. Having three losses in a single season is a win for most programs.
All this success bares the simple question of “Does recruiting matter for Utah State?”
From the looks of it, maybe not.
