The Georgia Bulldogs ranked 3rd in the College Football Rankings heading into their first matchup against the 11th ranked Oregon Ducks. The defending champions proved why they were ranked so high to start the season, but with recent news of the future college football playoff expansion, did Georgia ruin the 12 team CFP?
The Dismantling of the Ducks
The Bulldogs dominated from the start and never looked back. They held the lead against the Ducks for the entirety of the game as their defense shined holding Bo Nix to 21/37 for 173 yards and 2 INTs. This masterful performance by Kirby Smart’s defense held Oregon to 3 points all game. On the other side of the ball, QB Stetson Bennett 368 yards passing—a career high— and 2 TDs while also running one in for a score.
One wouldn’t expect two teams supposed to be so close in skill level to have ended in a lopsided score as this one. However, Georgia is ultimately in a league of their own accompanied by Alabama in terms of sheer dominance. Is this outcome a fluke? Will this represent future blowouts in the CFP?
CFB Matchup History
An important stat to note in figuring out whether future matchups will be as lopsided is to look at the CFP records. The #1 seed has a record of 6-2, the #2 seed is 4-4, the #3 seed is 4-4, and the #4 seed is 2-6. While it is a small sample size, it shows that the outcomes vary and are not as predetermined as they might seem. As expected, the top team in the country wins the most often. However, the #1 seed actually has a losing record of 2-4 in the National Championship game while the #4 seed has a 2-0 record. In addition, the #2 seed has a 3-1 record and the #3 seed has a 1-3 record in the National Championship.
Ultimately, this blowout matchup between the Ducks and the Bulldogs can be chalked up to either an early season dismantling or poor rankings. Later on in the season it will become increasingly less likely for such blowouts to happen between top teams as rankers more accurately judge the competition. If these outcomes continue to occur, should we be raising questions about the validity of the 12 team CFP?
