The NFL is in the process of releasing their annual top 100 players list. As of this moment, there is only one Green Bay Packer on the list. De’Vondre Campbell made the NFL Top 100 list coming in at no. 49.
Campbell’s 2021 Season
Campbell had a career year with the Packers in 2021. He spent 4 years with Atlanta and 1 year with Arizona before making his way to Green Bay. He thrived in Joe Barry’s system collecting 146 tackles (102 of them being solo), 2 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles. His impact also goes beyond the stat sheet. He was the defensive play caller and piloted a much improved Packers defense. He was named an All Pro at linebacker in 2021 as well. Campbell definitely deserved to make the NFL top 100 list.
Voted by Peers
The interesting aspect of the NFL top 100 list is that it is voted on by NFL players. What is great about this is you get insight into what current NFL players actually think about certain players. There is always a lot of controversy on these types of list and a lot of times you can point to media bias on certain players. While there is definitely player bias as well, I do think this gives an interesting view on who the players think are the best. Campbell coming in at no. 49 speaks a lot to what teams think about Campbell as a player.
Can He Sustain in 2022?
The big question coming into 2022 is whether Campbell can sustain his success. Last year was a career year and he got a good paycheck because of it. The Packers defense improved over the offseason. Quay Walker is a strong draft pick and looks to be in line to start next to Campbell. Jaire Alexander comes off of being injured most of last season so his presence feels like an upgrade to the secondary. The defensive line also looks scary good this season. Campbell will come back to the same scheme with improved players. There is no reason that success should not be sustained.
Campbell is such a great story that it is great to see him on the NFL Top 100 list. As the list comes out, it will be interesting to see what other Packers come in on the list.
