Detroit Lions Urged to Part Ways With Young Quarterback in Intriguing Trade Proposal

After securing Jared Goff to a massive extension $212 million, four-year extension, the Detroit Lions still have a number of items on their plate ahead of the new season.

Goff’s extension all but guarantees that incoming second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker is not going to be a QB1 anytime soon. In fact, he might not have a path toward becoming a starting quarterback while he remains in Detroit.

According to NFL analyst Matt Holder of Bleacher Report, the Lions should consider trading Hooker away. Holder points out that the 26-year-old has become surplus to requirements in Detroit, and that the Lions would benefit more from cashing in on him now as opposed to keeping him seated behind Goff:

“The Detroit Lions gave Jared Goff a contract extension this offseason, which pretty much ensures Hooker will be a backup throughout his rookie deal. Trading last year’s third-round pick to a QB-needy team sooner rather than later would allow the front office to maximize its return for him,” Holder wrote.

Losing Hooker means that that the front office will need to replace him on the roster. Nate Sudfeld may not be at the same level as Hooker, but he could get the job done. It would also be an option for the Lions to sign a veteran QB towards the latter part of the season if necessary.

Either way, it appears that Detroit will gain more in trading Hooker away as opposed to keeping him on the team. At this point, it would not be a complete surprise if the former Tennessee standout ends up finishing the season with a different squad.
