The Detroit Lions had their final full practice of training camp on Wednesday, which included an intra-squad scrimmage for their starters in preparation for the regular season. According to reports, it was a lively practice with great plays and big hits from all sides. However, the team, unfortunately, ended the practice with an injury to one of their key players on the offense, and his return to play is unknown.
Detroit Lions Offensive Star Injured
The Lions lost star offensive tackle Penei Sewell in practice due to a foot injury. Team safety Brian Branch expressed his concern for his teammate to the media immediately following the practice.
When Penei went down I was like, ‘Ah, not Penei,’ cause you know, shoot, that’s our number one offensive lineman right there, and hopefully it wasn’t nothing major or anything. I don’t think it was, so just prayers up.

The star offensive tackle was injured on the third play after Detroit returned from the locker room and simulated halftime. He suffered the injury while blocking on a passing play, and had to sit on the ground briefly before being helped by trainers back to the sideline.
Sewell’s Teammates Send Prayers
Sewell’s fellow tackle, Colby Sorsdal shared the harsh reality of key players like Penei getting injured and how it can affect a team.
A guy like Penei, you’re always just worried about him but that’s the reality of this league, too. No one’s God out there and as much as we want Penei to be God… anything can happen at any given time so when you’re number’s called you just got to go.
Over the past three seasons, Sewell has started in 50 out of 51 games played at both sides of the offensive line. He recently signed an extension this offseason worth $112 million for four years, which made him the highest-paid offensive tackle in all of football.
Will Sewell Be Ready For Season Opener?
Even with the injury to Sewell, the Lions have been cautious with their starters during the preseason, which means most of the first-stringers should be ready to go and fully healthy for the team’s opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Do you think Sewell will be ready to go for the team’s first game of the regular season, or will head coach Dan Campbell be more cautious and keep his star tackle out for a little longer?
