Detroit Lions face the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday
The Detroit Lions will be at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to take on the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday afternoon. Andy Reid made an announcement today about his plan for Saturday’s preseason game between the Chiefs and Lions.
When asked about the Chiefs’ plans for who’s playing on Saturday, the head coach told the media that the starters will take a half and they’ll fill in after that, and just kind of see how the rest of the third and fourth quarter goes.
Dan Campbell spoke on a local sports radio show yesterday and said it’s up to the players if they want to play or not but fans should not expect to see a lot of the starters, making Saturday’s game a bit more intriguing.
It could get not so pretty early in consideration of a first-string Super Bowl team against all backups on a team on the come-up, but it’s preseason and about reps for Campbell and his Detroit football team.
Hendon Hooker must start this game and go up against the Chiefs first-team defense because the Lions need to determine their backup quarterback situation. The organization is optimistic that despite coming off of injury reserve, Hooker could play well against Kansas City’s starting defense.

Concerns through preseason have been the wide receivers getting the proper reps especially if they’re not going up with a quarterback like Jared Goff
Dan Campbell said yesterday in his press conference that he’s been waiting for one of these wide receivers to step up and separate themselves. Campbell highlighted DPJ before yesterday’s practice as one who’s looked good since the Giants preseason game, which Detroit fans have been waiting to hear about. The Lions’ head coach also made claims that they’re dying for someone to step up like Trayquan Smith Darice Fountain, or Kaden Davis, i.e.
Players must seize the moment. In this competition, there’s an obvious top three with Aman-Ra, J-Mo, and Khalif Raymond. Green only had a couple of catches in preseason before going down with a concussion.
Antoine Green – Fans would have liked to see Green, the Lions 2024 seventh-round draft pick, make the team with his physical gifts. The Lions are hoping to get him on their injured reserve if he clears waivers which is highly likely for the Lions.
Jahmyr Gibbs – Injuries not going to affect the Lions for the first regular season game. Detroit fans were all crossing their fingers hearing it was just a hamstring and not anything season-threatening.
Jack Campbell – a player the Lions are counting on this year seems he’s going to be that Mike linebacker for the Lions’ defense this year he was drafted to be. Campbell’s ability to drop in in coverage has been much improved since his rookie year which was the big question with him. Campbell is great in the box playing the run but his coverage ability he actually needed honing on in his second year.
Jarred Golf targeted St. Brown across the middle and Campbell picked the ball off, seemingly catching St Brown off guard, and returned it. To see him make plays is huge given middle linebacker is one of those positions that’s tougher to vet when the defense isn’t tackling.
Craig Reynolds – a back who is pretty solidified. He’s not the flashy player but he does everything that you need your RB3 to do. The protections, the offensive lineman love him, he can pass protect, he can catch out of the backfield, he’s a very solid guy and player for that room
Jermar Jefferson is playing some really good football right now and doing everything the coaches want him to do. I don’t know if the Lions can justify five running backs (with Vaki) but definitely a practice squad guy if no team picks him up.
Terion Arnold – the first-round draft pick has performed well in their limited preseason action. Arnold not allowing a catch the entire game, showed early that he belongs in the NFL.
The Pride of Detroit, in Grand Valley
A lot of Lion fans were hopeful Matthew Judon, The Pride of Detroit in Grand Valley, could be coming to Detroit but he is not, he’s heading to Atlanta.
The Patriots owner Robert Craft shipped Judon to the Atlanta Falcons for a third-round pick in the upcoming draft. A good value for Atlanta to get Judon and a smart move by the Patriots to get a day-two draft pick as they rebuild.
Matthew Judon, in what would have been a great fit with the Lions, was traded yesterday to Atlanta. The 32-year-old edge rusher is a force and still an impact football player, but he doesn’t want to be in New England anymore due to the team’s rebuilding and they’re likely to end up with the worst record in the league. Judon is on the last year of his contract and making six and a half million, and wanted a renegotiation. He didn’t hold out but was not practicing at times.
What would have gotten you Matthew Judon was a third-round pick the Lions did not have. A third-round pick next year the Lions traded away to move up to take Giovani Manu but, in order to get Manu, they had to give away draft capital.
Sports fans are ready for the Detroit Lions. You win up front and whether or not the opposite side of Aiden Hutchinson is enough to get to the quarterback will determine the Lions’ trajectory. Opposite of Hutchinson, maybe Davenport, Pascal, Betts, Houston, or even Derek Barnes will be the one.
