The Detroit Lions were able to make the NFC Championship Game last season and were in a great position to potentially make the Super Bowl but are now trying to get back to that spot with massive expectations. However, they are going to be a man short now as ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that defensive end John Cominsky suffered a torn MCL during Tuesday’s practice and will be out indefinitely.
However, there is some optimism that he would be able to return in the postseason if the Detroit Lions can make it back. Cominsky was entering his third season with the Lions (sixth overall) and started 11 games. He finished with a career-high 36 total tackles, two sacks, eight QB hits and a pass deflection. In the playoffs, he recorded seven total tackles, a pair of quarterback hits and a pass deflection.
Cominsky was projected to be a backup defensive end this season as the team has Marcus Davenport and Aiden Hutchinson at the defensive end spots but this is still a massive blow to the Detroit Lions.
What should we expect from the Detroit Lions in 2024?
The Detroit Lions are still expected to be one of the teams that are contending for the postseason after their successful run last season. According to DraftKings, they are -245 favorites to make the playoffs and it makes a lot of sense, even in a tough NFC North.
The team still has a lot of talent that should be able to excel this year and with a healthy wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown this year and quarterback Jared Goff signed for the long haul, this team should be contenders for the next few seasons.
The team has been aggressive in keeping their talent this offseason and now are going to be in a position to keep the chemistry going and make that jump. The loss of John Cominsky stinks, but is not going to be the reason they miss the postseason, if they do. Expect them to be competing for the Super Bowl this season as this core has the experience.
