The Detroit Lions have to love what they got out of Jared Goff last season. The Lions had one of the best offenses in the league and they have high expectations for the 2023 season. While many analysts are wondering who the next quarterback of the team is going to be, the front office seems to be trying to figure out a way to keep Goff. Preliminary discussions of a contract extension have started according to GM Brad Holmes.

Detroit Lions And Jared Goff Discussing Contract Extension
GM Brad Holmes appeared on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit and had this to say about the Jared Goff contract situation.
“Yeah, we’ve had (internal) dialogue there,” Holmes explained. “We’ve had dialogue with his agent, and we’re in a good place right now.”
Goff is only signed through 2024 and is only 28 years old. If he has another season like he had in 2022, he would be considered one of the top quarterbacks in the NFC. The discussions seem to be in the beginning stages but the fact that they are happening is a surprise to some.
Should The Lions Commit To Goff Long Term?
Goff has had good seasons before but his game seems to have a ceiling. As long as he is protected and in perfect weather conditions he is a great quarterback. Put him in bad weather or under a little pressure and he makes very dumb decisions historically. The team also drafted Hendon Hooker in the third round and he could become the quarterback of the future. Holmes also admitted that drafting a first-round quarterback is not out of the question. The Lions are keeping all of their options open.
This will be an interesting situation to monitor. If Goff plays well, it is almost impossible to see a world where the Lions do not extend him. Will this be the right decision? Only time will tell.
