Several Detroit Lions starters appear on Wednesday’s injury report as they gear up for a Week 2 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Sept. 15.
On Wednesday, offensive tackle Penei Sewell, safeties Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu, and defensive end Marcus Davenport did not practice, while breakout wide receiver Jameson Williams was limited due to an ankle injury.
Sewell, who has an ankle injury, missed practice Wednesday as a precaution but is expected to play Sunday, according to the Detroit Free Press. Davenport is dealing with a groin injury and should return to practice later this week. Joseph is more uncertain; details about his hamstring injury are scarce. He appeared for warm-ups Wednesday but then went back to the locker room and was listed as a nonparticipant, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The full injury report for the Detroit Lions is as follows: Penei Sewell (ankle), Marcus Davenport (groin), Ifeatu Melifonwu (ankle), and Kerby Joseph (hamstring) were all nonparticipants in practice. Jameson Williams was a limited participant. Carlton Davis (chest), DJ Reader (quad), and Loren Strickland (thumb) were full participants.
Reader and Strickland were inactive Week 1 and will be making their season debuts Week 2 against the Buccaneers.
Williams Expected to Continue to Practice Despite Injury; Cautious Approach Planned
Williams was able to play through the injury to finish the game against the Rams and is expected to participate in the Detroit Lions Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Sept. 15. Despite this, his injury is worth monitoring. To ensure he is fully prepared, Williams will be taking a cautious approach during practice this week. Keep an eye on any updates throughout the week, as his status may be subject to change based on his progress.
Williams is coming off a Week 1 performance in which he caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. The explosive wide receiver not only led the Lions in receiving yards in the 26-20 overtime win over the Rams but also accounted for more yards than the rest of the Lions’ receiving corps combined. Williams’ shining moment came in the third quarter when he blew by Rams defensive back Tre’Davious White to make a 52-yard touchdown catch and run.
