The Detroit Lions are looking for a primer backup quarterback for Jared Goff for the 2024 season. The Lions will have high expectations for the 2024 season.
During training camp, there was a backup competition between Nate Sudfeld, the former Indiana Hoosiers quarterback, and Hendon Hooker, the former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback. Entering camp, Sudfeld was the projected backup quarterback behind Jared Goff.
Detroit Lions Release Former Indiana Hoosiers Quarterback Nate Sudfeld From the Team
According to a source to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Detroit Lions have released Nate Sudfeld from the roster. With this move, Hendon Hooker has won the backup quarterback job for the Lions. Hooker performed much better in the preseason than Sudfeld did.
Sudfeld completed 52.9% of his passes for 292 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. As for Hendon Hooker, he completed 60.0% of his passes for 114 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Hooker was also able to provide a rushing game element to his arsenal and provide energy for the offense when he was in the game.
It will be interesting to see which NFL team will want to sign Nate Sudfeld to their roster after teams finalize their 53-man rosters by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Sudfield was drafted in the sixth round (187th overall pick) in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders. He is 30 years old and also has played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the past.

Seriously. Everybody knew Hendon Hooker performed better under the bright lights. One game from Jake Fromm and everybody knew that even he was better than Nate Sudfeld. Dude should’ve been cooked to anybody who watched the preseason https://t.co/PAi7goo5Ao

Hendon Hooker QB2–>QB1 development with increased footing in Detroit. He’s now their official Backup-QB after the roster cut of Nate Sudfeld.
Don’t be forgetting about Hendon Hooker these next few years in backup of Goff, he’s their working Future-QB.https://t.co/eGRQ0jPCJL

It would be interesting to see if in a couple of years from now if Hendon Hooker is the future quarterback for the Detroit Lions. They recently gave Jared Goff a contract extension. Also, Nate Sudfeld could wind up back on the Detroit Lions practice squad.
