The first-seed Detroit Lions will not play this weekend during the first round of the playoffs, also known as the Super Wild Card round, since they clinched the first seed, a first-round BYE, and home-field advantage last Sunday night. Once the Super Wild Card round finishes this weekend, Detroit will face off against the lowest remaining seed at Ford Field for the Divisional Round, either next Saturday or Sunday. Having a much-needed BYE allows the Lions an extra week to recover from injuries and more time to prepare for their Divisional Round opponent.
The Detroit Lions’ star veteran running back suffered a significant injury in Week 15
David Montgomery suffered a significant knee injury during the second quarter in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills after tweaking something in his knee after a successful fourth-down conversion attempt. He later returned to the game, but his last snap occurred at the 10:34 mark in the fourth quarter.
Tests determined that he had suffered a torn MCL, which would require surgery. However, after consulting with several medical doctors, Montgomery opted against undergoing season-ending surgery and instead partake in extensive rehab with hopes of returning to the playoffs. As a result, the veteran running back has missed Weeks 16-18 as he continues to rehab.
Lions’ running back receives a massive injury update
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, during Tuesday’s press conference, head coach Dan Campbell told the media that David Montgomery is expected to be ready to return for the Divisional Round. As previously discussed, not having to play during the Super Wild Card will allow the Lions an extra week for players, including Montgomery, to rest and recover from their injuries.
