The Denver Broncos were in rebuilding mode from the minute this offseason started. That is because they were moving on from QB Russell Wilson after a disappointing 2023 season. As a result, the Broncos ended up drafting QB Bo Nix in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
With a young quarterback taking over and WR Jerry Jeudy gone, it became crucial for the Broncos to keep veteran WR Courtland Sutton happy. Now, they did just that with Sutton’s latest contract update.
Courtland Sutton to Receive $1.5 Million in Additional Incentives
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Denver Broncos are giving WR Courtland Sutton additional incentives in 2024. Pelissero revealed that his contract will include $1.5 million in additional incentives this season. Originally, Sutton only had about $100,000 in possible incentives for this upcoming season.
With this contract restructure, Sutton can earn up to $15.2 million this season. He currently has two years left on his contract and is due $26.5 million in base salary.
Fantastic 2023 Season
Courtland Sutton has been in the NFL for six seasons, all with the Denver Broncos. Yet, his 2023 season was arguably the best season he had in his NFL career.
So, what did Sutton do last season? For starters, he had 10 touchdown receptions while having just 24 total touchdown receptions in his career. On top of this, he had 772 receiving yards.
An important note here is that Sutton has not had the best quarterbacks to work with. Russell Wilson was arguably the best quarterback he had in his entire career. Some of the other quarterbacks Sutton has been stuck with since 2018 include Jarrett Stidham, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, and even a wide receiver!
Denver Broncos Moving Forward
This move should make Denver Broncos fans sleep easier. Now, arguably their best wide receiver has more contract security moving forward. That is crucial considering the Broncos do not have many offensive weapons to work with this year.
As mentioned above, Sutton has not had any real quarterback stability throughout the course of his career. Now, the Broncos hope that they can finally provide Sutton this by drafting Bo Nix. While he was the sixth quarterback taken in the 2024 NFL Draft, Nix proved in college that he can step up when he needs to. After having success at both Auburn and Oregon, it is time to see what he can do with Sutton on the big stage.
