The Denver Broncos met with a Patriots’ assistant
The Denver Broncos are taking their time to find the right defensive coordinator. They met with a candidate who has a checkered history as a coach. New head coach Sean Payton doesn’t have an offensive coordinator either. The Super Bowl-winning coach has been slow to ink his staff for next season as he attempts to rebuild the Broncos’ culture.

Reports have revealed that Rex Ryan is the top choice for the Broncos’ next defensive coordinator. Vance Joseph is also a candidate for the vacancy. According to Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the Broncos met with Matt Patricia. Patricia will speak with Payton on Thursday.
The #Broncos spent today with an intriguing candidate for their vacant defense coordinator job: Matt Patricia. Sources tell me and @TomPelissero the former #Patriots assistant is in Denver speaking with Sean Payton today. Rex Ryan and Vance Joseph are also top candidates.

Patricia was the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator from 2012-17. His defenses were suspect, and Boston sports fans like Bill Simmons didn’t care much for the coach. Simmons was pleased when Patricia left to become the Detroit Lions head coach in 2018–a team he inherited with a winning record that would win nine games the next two seasons. The “rocket scientist” didn’t have a good defense in Detroit. His Lions teams were known for being blown out.
Patricia became the Patriots’ senior football advisor after he was kicked out of Detroit. After offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels accepted the head coaching gig in Las Vegas, the Patriots used Joe Judge and Patricia to coach the offense in tandem. The collaborative-new-age group thing Bill Belichick tried with offense failed spectacularly, as Patricia and Judges’ offense posted the worst Patriots offense since 1995.
It’ll be interesting to see how Patricia proceeds with the Denver Broncos. Payton appears to be looking at two defensive coordinator candidates, Patricia and Ryan, who have a multi-year gap in their defensive coaching resume.
