The Denver Broncos have one of the most interesting quarterback competitions taking place during training camp. That is because there is no clear quarterback of the future on this team.
On the one hand, you have Jarrett Stidham, who took over for Russell Wilson near the end of last season as the Broncos quarterback. Then, you have Bo Nix, who was the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. With that in mind, Broncos head coach Sean Payton has revealed his quarterback plans for the team’s first preseason game vs. the Indianapolis Colts.
Jarrett Stidham Is Starting vs. Indianapolis Colts
According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS, it will be Jarrett Stidham getting the start for the Denver Broncos in the team’s first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts. This was confirmed by Broncos head coach Sean Payton.
Payton also revealed that all three quarterbacks will get playing time in this game. Bo Nix will go second, and Zach Wilson will go third. One important note here is that Payton hinted that it was possible that Nix would get a few snaps with the first team in this game.
Last Chance for Jarrett Stidham?
This is arguably Jarrett Stidham’s last chance to secure a starting job in the NFL. While he is currently the starting quarterback, this can easily be taken away from him. It is also his fifth year in the NFL.
What has Stidham done during his first four years in the NFL? Well, he has played in 16 games, and he has 1,422 passing yards. However, he has eight touchdown passes and eight interceptions during this stretch. Last season, Stidham played in three games for the Broncos. During those three games, he had 496 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and an interception.
Denver Broncos Moving Forward
This is likely going to be a pivotal year for head coach Sean Payton. That is because he decided to move off of veteran QB Russell Wilson in favor of a fresh start. While there may not be pressure on the Broncos to make the playoffs this season, there has to be signs of things heading in the right direction.
That is where Box Nix comes into play for Denver. He will likely get playing time at some point in the 2024 season. Ideally, he becomes the quarterback of the future and one of the biggest steals of the 2024 NFL Draft.
