Denver Broncos Willis McGahee’s Story
According to an article done by “The Athletic,” the running back was lost in life as most of his years were spent giving his all to the sport. He had trouble finding a purpose in life after football, which led to him seriously contemplating suicide.
When it’s gone, you really have nothing to fall back on, it’s just a lot coming at you, man, and it gets mentally tough.
The running back believed that he still had what it took tp play in the NFL, but the league viewed him as “washed up” and “unworthy” of a roster spot, which caused teams to not have interest in him, and eventually led to his retirement. Reality set in for McGahee after years of retirement, and he doubted that he wanted to exist in the life after football. He revealed that it crossed his mind a couple of times to take his own life, which thankfully, he did not do.
It’s just a lot going on, and me being the athlete I am, I just try to suck it up. But I’m tired of sucking it up because it’s killing me inside.
NFL Disability Plan
McGahee also revealed that he sought benefits through the NFL Disability Plan. To receive the benefits, players must complete an application, provide required documents, and attend at least one medial examination. The running back received some of the benefits, but was denied of T&P benefits, which caused him to apply once again. Since then, he has been denied of these benefits every year even though he has provided the supporting documents that are required according to him.
It’s not benefitting the players who are really, actually hurt and going through stuff in life. They’re not taking care of us. It’s a sham. I’m tired of it. Somebody has to step up and do something about it.
McGahee is thankfully doing better now, but he raises a big issue with the NFL Disability Plan. Hopefully, after hearing the running back’s story, the league makes the changes and takes the player’s mental health a bigger priority.
