Denver Broncos Named Top Candidate For 3x Pro Bowler Free Agent

The Denver Broncos are heading into a season with unusually large expectations.  After trading for Russell Wilson last off-season, the 2022 campaign went about as poorly as it could have.  The Broncos finished 5-12, well outside of playoff conversation, and had one of the worst-ranked offenses in the league.

Following the season the Broncos fired first year head coach Nathaniel Hackett and brought it veteran head coach Sean Payton.  Even after finishing 5-12 last year, expectations around Denver are a complete 180.  Something that could help with that?  A three-time pro bowl defensive end.

The Denver Broncos Named Prime Candidate To Sign Free Agent Edge Rusher Melvin Ingram

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report made a statement about what this signing would do for Denver:

The Denver Broncos’ pass rush has to be better than last season. They were 26th in pressure percentage and were tied for 23rd in sacks last season.

For the most part, the Broncos are relying on development and coaching for that improvement. They haven’t done much to address the position this offseason. They signed Frank Clark, but they also lost Jacob Martin and didn’t get any help from the draft.

There are still some intriguing young players on the roster. Baron Browning showed some promise after moving to the edge from inside linebacker, although the Broncos placed him on PUP to start the season. Nik Bonitto should take a step forward in his second season.

Signing a veteran like Melvin Ingram would give them an experienced player with some juice left who wouldn’t command a huge share of the snaps. He played 45 percent of the defensive snaps for the Miami Dolphins last season and tallied six sacks across 17 games.

For the role he played in 2022, Ingram had a very respectable season. As far as careers in the NFL are concerned, Ingram has had a darn good one with 11 seasons in the books. Last year he started three games and recorded six sacks. That brought his career total to 57 sacks. On top of that, he also added 22 tackles in a spot role and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Bringing a veteran pass rusher who had six sacks the year seems like a no-brainer for many teams.  The Broncos would have to at least consider this for their depth along the defensive line.
