Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders thinks the media is being too harsh on his kids. Sanders blasted the press this week, again, before his upcoming game against Baylor this Saturday.
Sanders and the media have had a few public spats in recent weeks. He refused to answer questions from a local CBS reporter. Colorado banned another reporter from asking questions because of his alegged personal attacks against the program.
Sanders’ contract with Colorado gives him the unique authority to decide who can have access to press conferences. The coach clearly has disdain from the same media that has given the Buffaloes more attention than they should after a 4-8 season in 2023.
Deion Sanders says the media has changed
This week, Sanders turned his ire to the media’s coverage of his players. Sanders thinks the NIL has made the media jealous of players, and reporters lash out at players for making more money than they do.
“The landscape has changed in football,” Sanders said via video from Fox Sports. “Once upon a time, you guys never attacked college players, now they’re making more money than y’all, and some of y’all are envious and jealous about that, so you’re on the attack. It was hands-off for college players cause he was an amateur, remember that guys? Now it’s hands-on.”
Sanders is right that coverage has changed. College football players in today’s age are professional adults. When they act like celebrities on and off the field, they’re going to be treated like celebrities. It comes with the territory, as Sanders knows too well.
Colorado Buffaloes players are too sensitive
Sanders suggested that his players are “sensitive” to the media criticism.
“When you attack ’em attack ’em attack ’em, these guys are sensitive. They’ve never been attacked. They hadn’t gone through what a grown man, what I’ve been going through with y’all for years. They haven’t done that,” Sanders said.
Part of Sanders’ job is to get his players ready for the next level. NFL players are subject to a high level of scrutiny. His players are willing to mock and berate former Colorado players to the media. Those same players can handle the heat.

Unfortunately, Coach Sanders is right. So many people are jealous of NIL money. I think he should train his players how to handle questions, by keeping response to one liners, so they don’t get bated into those sensitive conversation. Lamar Ball made his boys professionals in the “unloaded response”. Comes in really handy when you get the intentional bated questions. They just have to start behaving and interacting like professional football players. They will get better at it if they keep winning.
