Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders doesn’t want his revamped 2024 squad playing in too many marquee matchups this season. Sanders must be nervous about his team’s prospects this fall after falling to 4-8 on the 2023 campaign after starting the season 3-0.
Sanders is apparently upset with Rick George, the Buffaloes’ athletic director, for scheduling a formidable FCS opponent in Week 1 of the regular season. Yes, Sanders’ Buffaloes are worried about non-Division 1 football teams.
Deion Sanders feels the judgment
As previously discussed, Sanders said this week during Big 12 Media Days that he and Colorado face more judgment than most college teams:
“I’m judged on a different scale. My wins are totally different than your wins. Your wins; you just judging football. That’s why I have to start by giving you education, academics, and so forth. I have to give you those things so you understand there is a greater scope.
I can’t win nine games, and our GPA suffers. Our GPA can’t be high but we lose another eight games. We can’t not go and grab high school players, and you got a bunch of guys out of the portal getting incarcerated. My wins are different. We have to win in every area. That’s the way we are judged, and I’m cool with that.”
A Sanders’ win in Week 1 would indeed be different, as Colorado would notch a win against an FCS opponent. The Buffaloes will start their season against North Dakota State. NDSU was a powerhouse in the 2010s, winning eight FCS National Championships in the decade. Their last title came in 2021.
The Colorado Buffaloes are worried about playing an FCS team
According to Ross Fellender with Yahoo Sports, Sanders said he’s upset with George for scheduling NDSU.
“I’m mad at (AD) Rick (George) right now for putting them on the schedule to open up with them,” Sanders said. “Can you give me a layup?”
Sanders has claimed he’s the best coach in college football. His message to the locker room here isn’t very inspiring. No one is going to feel sorry for Sanders having to coach against an FCS team, no matter how good they are, especially given that he has a round-one quarterback under center.
