BYU Defensive Coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki Steps Down after the defense struggled this past season. He announced on his Instagram earlier today after the Cougars took down the Cardinal last night. After seven years and for the first time since Kalani Sitake started at BYU he is looking for a defensive coordinator.
Ilaisa Tuiaki
Started in 2016 as DC when the coaching staff changed after Mendenhall left. This season he serves as DC and the defensive line coach. The game plan and calling the plays on Saturday lies with him. So far this season and other seasons he hasn’t produced a game that will win the Cougars game in the Big12.
After not calling the season that should have been called and it showed in those losses and the wins that shouldn’t been that close. With a team this talented he didn’t give them the game plan to succeed. After the lose to Liberty Kalani Sitake announced that he would take over calling the defense the rest of the season. It showed on the field and on the sidelines the defense looked more alive and more like they wanted to fight to get the win.

After what the college football season has seen this year I don’t know many places he could coach in a coordinator role but maybe as a position coach at a smaller school. This leaves the Cougars looking for a new defensive coordinator as they move into the Big 12 to join a power 5 conference.
