The New York Jets bet big that pairing Davante Adams at the trade deadline with Aaron Rodgers would elevate the offense, but that wager looks to be going bust.
This week, the Jets fired general manager Joe Douglas, and are in the midst of a two-game losing streak while dropping seven of their last eight games as the chasm between New York and the Buffalo Bills for the AFC East lead is wider than ever.
With former head coach Robert Saleh, and now Douglas, fired this offseason could bring sweeping changes to the Jets.
At least one NFL analyst suggests the clock could be ticking on Adams’ tenure in the Big Apple.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine put together a list the top candidates to be cut this offseason by teams who failed to live up to expectations this fall, including Adams.
“Admittedly, the Jets should be able to find at least some trade value for Adams,” Ballentine writes for B/R. “But his contract is going to be fairly hard to offload. Still, New York might also be better off simply cutting its losses and moving on.
“It isn’t like the 31-year-old can’t still produce at a high level, though; it’s the fact that this Jets team could be in for a complete remodel once Rodgers moves on.”
Adams hasn’t exactly hit the ground running since he arrived in New York, catching 26 passes for 278 yards and a touchdown in five games.
If there’s an organizational reset, and Adams can fetch draft capital or even if a new general manager believes a complete teardown is in order, it wouldn’t be the least bit surpising if Adams is elsewhere next season.
